National Science Day 2025 (in Hindi : राष्ट्रीय विज्ञान दिन) – National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928. For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

Celebrated as National Science Day, this day sees focus on discoveries and developments. The theme for this year’s National Science Day is ‘Women in Science’. The main event of the National Science Day will take place at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. President Ram Nath will be present at the event.

History of National Science Day

- Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on 7 November 1888 at Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
- 1917, Sir C. V. Raman was appointed the first Palit Professor of Physics at the University of Calcutta.
- He continued doing research at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) in Calcutta.
- On 28 February 1928, Raman led an experiment with K. S. Krishnan, on the scattering of light, when he discovered what now is called the Raman effect.The field of Raman spectroscopy came to be based on this phenomenon.
